Fury, a classic runabout
twin cockpit that was raced, but has been restored and is run as a ski
boat in Tassy.
Fury was advertised for sale
in Melbourne on the CAWPBC site in November 2000. She had been the type
of Lewis I had been searching for here in Tassy for several years without
any luck.
Why this Lewis? Because
of childhood memories of Fury racing here in the 1960’s. (At this
stage I didn't know she was the same boat as the original red stain
& name had been removed)
After bringing her back to Tassy in March 2001 the search began for
her past. After contacting previous owners the name Fury came up. I
recalled the last person that had Fury in Tasmania & as he had an
unusual name I searched the Melbourne phone books & the first person
contacted was him.
He told me he relocated to Melbourne in the early eighties & took
Fury with him. He remembered many modifications done to the hull that
were present that proved beyond doubt that she was the same Fury that
raced here in the 1960’s.
I have been able to contact the original owners son in Launceston who
told me his father bought the boat new from Lewis Brothers at Taren
Point in 1962. He was also able to pass on some old trophies she had
won in her racing days.
She is 17' 6" in length, was originally powered with a highly modified
327ci Chev Corvette & ran at speeds in excess of 75 mph. A previous
owner damaged that engine & she now runs a 350ci Chev.
Have recently rebuilt 6 stromberg
carbies to put back on her to bring her back to how she was originally
presented for racing.
Fury was the boat to beat in circuit racing here in the sixties &
she won the Cock of the Mersey (considered the Unlimited Championship
of Tasmania in 1965,1968,1969 & 1970)
