Stampede, still King of the Water, after Yarrawonga 600
Stampede, still King of the Water, after Yarrawonga 600
Stampede at Yarrawonga
After tremendous racing at Yarrawonga over the New Year weekend Stan Jones and Bob Saniga’s champion hydro Stampede was still King of the fast ones.

But it was close. After aggregate times of two heats Stampede was just TWO seconds clear of Vulture which had the edge around the turns but could not match the blistering speed of the hydro on the straights.

The first heat of the Yarrawonga 600 resulted in a-three-second win to Stampede over Vulture.
In the second heat Vulture turned the tables and won by one second but the canny Jones in Stampede stayed just close enough to clinch the outright.

It was the keenest racing seen for years. The new Redline (Peter Wade) now a hydro provided the surprise of the meeting.

In the first heat of the 600 it cleared right away from both Stampede and Vulture and led by 100 yds before it blew up.

Our observer claimed there was no fluke element and freely tipped the new boat to be top contender for the Griffith Cup.
